Interactions between your drugs

Major

mercaptopurine BCG

Applies to: Purinethol (mercaptopurine) and TheraCys (bcg)

If you are currently being treated or have recently been treated with mercaptopurine, you should let your doctor know before receiving BCG. Depending on the dose and length of time you have been on mercaptopurine, you may be at risk for developing an infection from BCG or have a reduced response to BCG. In some situations, your doctor may want to delay treatment with BCG to give your body time to recover from the effects of mercaptopurine therapy. Additionally, since the bacteria in BCG may persist in the urinary tract for months after treatment, you may still be at increased risk for infection even if you receive mercaptopurine after you have stopped treatment with BCG for some time. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Drug and food interactions

Moderate

mercaptopurine food

Applies to: Purinethol (mercaptopurine)

You may experience reduced absorption of mercaptopurine in the presence of food. Take mercaptopurine on an empty stomach 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal. This will make it easier for your body to absorb the medication.

Major Highly clinically significant. Avoid combinations; the risk of the interaction outweighs the benefit.
Moderate Moderately clinically significant. Usually avoid combinations; use it only under special circumstances.
Minor Minimally clinically significant. Minimize risk; assess risk and consider an alternative drug, take steps to circumvent the interaction risk and/or institute a monitoring plan.
