Interactions between octreotide and Bromocriptine (bromocriptine)

Moderate Drug-Drug Interaction bromocriptine and octreotide (Moderate Drug-Drug)

MONITOR: Coadministration with somatostatin analogs (e.g., octreotide, lanreotide) may increase the plasma concentrations of bromocriptine and other ergot alkaloids. The proposed mechanism is inhibition of CYP450 3A4 metabolism secondary to suppression of growth hormones by somatostatin analogs. Acromegalic patients treated with bromocriptine and octreotide have exhibited increased plasma levels of bromocriptine. No data are available for lanreotide.

MANAGEMENT: Caution is advised if somatostatin analogs are used in combination with ergot alkaloids. Patients should be monitored for potential ergot toxicity including peripheral vasospasm, ischemia, thrombosis, tachycardia, and hypertension. Patients should be advised to notify their physician if they experience potential signs and symptoms of ergotism such as paresthesia, tingling of fingers, cold or painful extremities, numbness, muscle cramps, abdominal pain, rapid pulse, or chest pain.
