Applies to: Prozac (fluoxetine) and Nembutal (pentobarbital)
Animal studies have suggested that fluoxetine may potentiate the effects of barbiturates. The mechanism may be related to inhibition of barbiturate metabolism. This interaction has not been reported in humans. Until further information is available concerning this interaction, caution is recommended if fluoxetine and a barbiturate must be used together. Monitoring for prolonged or excessive CNS-depressant effects is recommended.
