Interactions between magnesium-citrate(magnesium citrate) and Cardioquin (quinidine)

Moderate Drug-Drug Interaction quinidine and magnesium citrate (Moderate Drug-Drug)

MONITOR: Limited and conflicting data suggest that some medications such as aluminum, magnesium, and calcium laxatives and antacids may decrease the urinary excretion of quinidine. The mechanism is alkalinization of the urine, which increases renal tubular reabsorption of quinidine. Increased serum quinidine levels may increase the risk of toxicity and arrhythmias. QT prolongation and torsades de pointes may occur.

MANAGEMENT: If patients require antacids or laxatives during quinidine therapy, monitoring for clinical and laboratory evidence of quinidine toxicity is recommended. Patients should be advised to notify their physician if they experience tinnitus, hearing loss, visual disturbances, diarrhea, dizziness, weakness, headache, syncope, or rapid or irregular heartbeats.
