Interactions between magaldrate and Aralen phosphate (chloroquine)

Moderate Drug-Drug Interaction chloroquine and magaldrate (Moderate Drug-Drug)

ADJUST DOSING INTERVAL: Concomitant administration of antacids, kaolin, or magnesium compounds may reduce the bioavailability of chloroquine. The proposed mechanism is adsorption of chloroquine by the antacid or kaolin. Decreased dissolution of chloroquine in the presence of magnesium has also been reported. Chloroquine absorption may be reduced by as much as 30% to 53%. The efficacy of chloroquine may be decreased, which could potentially result in therapeutic failure. Hydroxychloroquine may theoretically also be affected.

MANAGEMENT: It is recommended that the administration of these preparations and chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine be separated by at least 4 hours.
