Interactions between implanon(etonogestrel) and Cellcept (mycophenolate mofetil)
mycophenolate mofetil and etonogestrel (Moderate Drug-Drug)
ADDITIONAL CONTRACEPTION RECOMMENDED: The effectiveness of oral contraceptives may be impaired by concomitant treatment with mycophenolic acid. The mechanism is unknown. In a study of ethinyl estradiol-containing combination contraceptives in 18 women with psoriasis over 3 menstrual cycles, the average levonorgestrel area under the concentration-time curve (AUC) decreased by 15%. Average AUCs of ethinyl estradiol, 3-keto desogestrel, and gestodene did not change significantly; however, there was a large interpatient variability (60% to 70%) in AUCs, especially for ethinyl estradiol. Mycophenolate did not affect ovulation suppression or average serum levels of FSH, LH, and progesterone.
MANAGEMENT: Oral contraceptives and mycophenolate mofetil should be administered concurrently with caution. It is recommended that additional contraceptive methods be considered. Intrauterine systems are unlikely to be significantly affected because of their local action.
