Interactions between hydrochlorothiazide and Abc plus senior (multivitamin with minerals)

MONITOR: Coadministration of thiazide diuretics and calcium may result in hypercalcemia, particularly in patients taking large doses of calcium (i.e. several grams/day) and those with conditions associated with high rates of bone turnover (e.g., hyperparathyroidism, hypoparathyroidism treated with high dosages of vitamin D). Thiazide diuretics inhibit the renal excretion of calcium and may also enhance responsiveness of bone and renal tubule to parathyroid hormone, thus coadministration with large amounts of calcium can lead to toxicity. Prolonged therapy with the combination has been associated with development of the milk-alkali syndrome and metabolic alkalosis.
MANAGEMENT: Serum calcium should be monitored regularly if thiazide diuretics are administered with calcium. Patients should be advised to contact their physician if they experience signs and symptoms of hypercalcemia such as dizziness, weakness, lethargy, headache, myalgia, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, or seizures.
