raNITIdine bismuth citrate rilpivirine

Applies to: Tritec (ranitidine bismuth citrate) and emtricitabine / rilpivirine / tenofovir

By reducing the acidity level in the stomach, raNITIdine bismuth citrate can decrease the absorption and blood levels of rilpivirine and make the medication less effective against HIV. To minimize the risk of interaction, raNITIdine bismuth citrate should be taken at least 12 hours before or 4 hours after you take rilpivirine. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have questions on how to take this or other medications you are prescribed. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Using tenofovir together with raNITIdine bismuth citrate can increase the blood levels and effects of both medications. Contact your doctor if your condition changes or you experience increased side effects, especially kidney problems. You may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications. You should seek immediate medical attention if you develop signs and symptoms that may suggest kidney damage such as nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, increased or decreased urination, sudden weight gain or weight loss, fluid retention, swelling, shortness of breath, bone pain, muscle cramps, tiredness, weakness, dizziness, confusion, and irregular heart rhythm. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Food significantly increases the absorption of rilpivirine. You should take each dose of rilpivirine with a meal. Taking it on an empty stomach may lead to inadequate blood levels and reduced effectiveness of the medication. Grapefruit juice can also increase the absorption of rilpivirine and should preferably be avoided.
