Drug interactions between Colestid Flavored and Inderide

Results for the following 2 drugs:
Colestid Flavored (colestipol)
Inderide (hydrochlorothiazide/propranolol)

Interactions between your selected drugs

hydrochlorothiazide ↔ colestipol

Applies to:Inderide (hydrochlorothiazide/propranolol) and Colestid Flavored (colestipol)

ADJUST DOSING INTERVAL: Colestipol may decrease the absorption of the thiazide diuretics. Diuretic effect may be reduced. The mechanism is believed to be thiazide binding by the anion-exchange resin in the intestine, resulting in decreased plasma levels and decreased urinary excretion of thiazides. This interaction has been reported in clinical studies with chlorothiazide and hydrochlorothiazide.

MANAGEMENT: Thiazide diuretics should be administered as far apart from colestipol as possible, but at least one hour before or four hours after colestipol. Patients should be monitored for loss of diuretic effect and electrolyte imbalances.

propranolol ↔ colestipol

Applies to:Inderide (hydrochlorothiazide/propranolol) and Colestid Flavored (colestipol)

Limited data suggest that colestipol may alter the absorption of propranolol. The clinical significance is unknown. Blood pressure and pulse rate changes were not reported.

Drug Interaction Classification

The classifications below are a guideline only. The relevance of a particular drug interaction to a specific patient is difficult to determine using this tool alone given the large number of variables that may apply.

Major Highly clinically significant. Avoid combinations; the risk of the interaction outweighs the benefit.
Moderate Moderately clinically significant. Usually avoid combinations; use it only under special circumstances.
Minor Minimally clinically significant. Minimize risk; assess risk and consider an alternative drug, take steps to circumvent the interaction risk and/or institute a monitoring plan.
