This report displays the potential drug interactions for the following 2 drugs:

Edit list (add/remove drugs)

Interactions between your drugs

Moderate

captopril hydroCHLOROthiazide

Applies to: Capozide 50 / 25 (captopril / hydrochlorothiazide) and Capozide 50 / 25 (captopril / hydrochlorothiazide)

Although captopril and hydroCHLOROthiazide are frequently combined together, their effects may be additive on lowering your blood pressure. You may need a dose adjustment or special tests to safely take both medications. Contact your doctor if you have a reduced heart rate, dizziness, fainting, or headaches. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Moderate

phenylephrine caffeine

Applies to: caffeine / pheniramine / phenylephrine / sodium citrate / sodium salicylate and caffeine / pheniramine / phenylephrine / sodium citrate / sodium salicylate

Consumer information for this interaction is not currently available.

MONITOR: Coadministration of two or more sympathomimetic agents may increase the risk of adverse effects such as nervousness, irritability, and increased heart rate. Central nervous system (CNS) stimulants, particularly amphetamines, can potentiate the adrenergic response to vasopressors and other sympathomimetic agents. Additive increases in blood pressure and heart rate may occur due to enhanced peripheral sympathetic activity.

MANAGEMENT: Caution is advised if two or more sympathomimetic agents are coadministered. Pulse and blood pressure should be closely monitored.

Moderate

captopril sodium salicylate

Applies to: Capozide 50 / 25 (captopril / hydrochlorothiazide) and caffeine / pheniramine / phenylephrine / sodium citrate / sodium salicylate

Talk to your doctor before using captopril together with sodium salicylate. Combining these medications may reduce the effects of captopril in lowering blood pressure. In addition, these medications may affect your kidney function, especially when they are used together frequently or chronically. You are more likely to develop impaired kidney function during treatment with these medications if you are also using a diuretic ("water pill") or if you are elderly or have preexisting kidney disease. You may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications. Contact your doctor if you experience signs and symptoms that may suggest kidney damage such as nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, increased or decreased urination, sudden weight gain or weight loss, fluid retention, swelling, shortness of breath, muscle cramps, tiredness, weakness, dizziness, confusion, and irregular heart rhythm. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Moderate

sodium salicylate sodium citrate

Applies to: caffeine / pheniramine / phenylephrine / sodium citrate / sodium salicylate and caffeine / pheniramine / phenylephrine / sodium citrate / sodium salicylate

Using sodium citrate together with sodium salicylate may decrease the effects of sodium salicylate. Contact your doctor if your condition changes. If your doctor does prescribe these medications together, you may need a dose adjustment or special test to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Drug and food interactions

Moderate

captopril food

Applies to: Capozide 50 / 25 (captopril / hydrochlorothiazide)

It is recommended that if you are taking captopril you should be advised to avoid moderately high or high potassium dietary intake. This can cause high levels of potassium in your blood. Do not use salt substitutes or potassium supplements while taking captopril, unless your doctor has told you to.

Moderate

pheniramine food

Applies to: caffeine / pheniramine / phenylephrine / sodium citrate / sodium salicylate

Alcohol can increase the nervous system side effects of pheniramine such as dizziness, drowsiness, and difficulty concentrating. Some people may also experience impairment in thinking and judgment. You should avoid or limit the use of alcohol while being treated with pheniramine. Do not use more than the recommended dose of pheniramine, and avoid activities requiring mental alertness such as driving or operating hazardous machinery until you know how the medication affects you. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns.

captopril food

Applies to: Capozide 50 / 25 (captopril / hydrochlorothiazide)

Captopril and ethanol may have additive effects in lowering your blood pressure. You may experience headache, dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting, and/or changes in pulse or heart rate. These side effects are most likely to be seen at the beginning of treatment, following a dose increase, or when treatment is restarted after an interruption. Let your doctor know if you develop these symptoms and they do not go away after a few days or they become troublesome. Avoid driving or operating hazardous machinery until you know how the medications affect you, and use caution when getting up from a sitting or lying position. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
