Interactions between byetta(exenatide) and Glimepiride (glimepiride)

Moderate Drug-Drug Interaction glimepiride and exenatide (Moderate Drug-Drug)

ADJUST DOSE: The use of exenatide in combination with a sulfonylurea may potentiate the risk of hypoglycemia. In clinical trials, the incidence of hypoglycemia was increased with this combination compared to a sulfonylurea with placebo.

MANAGEMENT: To minimize the risk of hypoglycemia, a dosage reduction of the sulfonylurea may be considered when used in combination with exenatide. Blood glucose should be monitored closely, and patients should be counseled to recognize symptoms of hypoglycemia such as headache, dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, tremor, weakness, hunger, excessive perspiration, and palpitations. If hypoglycemia occurs, patients should initiate appropriate remedial therapy immediately and contact their physician.
