Interactions between azasan(azathioprine) and Mercaptopurine (mercaptopurine)
azathioprine and mercaptopurine (Major Drug-Drug)
GENERALLY AVOID: Azathioprine may potentiate the toxicities of 6-mercaptopurine. Azathioprine is metabolized to 6-mercaptopurine in vivo, thus concomitant administration may result in additive adverse effects, including myelosuppression, immunosuppression, and hepatotoxicity. Death was reported in a patient inadvertently prescribed 6-mercaptopurine (100 mg daily) by a physician who was unaware that the patient was already receiving azathioprine (150 mg once a day) for Crohn's disease. The patient developed profound myelosuppression and severe sepsis, and later died.
MANAGEMENT: Concurrent use of azathioprine and 6-mercaptopurine should be avoided.
