High doses of salicylates may inhibit the uricosuric effect of probenecid. The mechanism and clinical significance are unknown. Large doses of salicylates should be avoided in patients who require probenecid to treat hyperuricemia. However, occasional use of low-dosage salicylates for analgesia should not interfere with the action of probenecid. Patients should be monitored for decreased uricosuric effects of probenecid.
