Talk to your doctor before using alendronate together with aspirin. If you take a medication like alendronate by mouth, combining it with aspirin may increase your risk of developing gastrointestinal ulcers and bleeding. Contact your doctor immediately if you develop severe abdominal pain, bloating, sudden dizziness or lightheadedness, nausea, vomiting (especially with blood), loss of appetite, and/or black, tarry stools. On the other hand, if you receive a medication like alendronate by IV infusion, you may have an increased risk of kidney problems if you also use aspirin on a regular or long-term basis. You may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications. You should seek medical attention if you experience signs and symptoms that may suggest kidney damage such as nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, increased or decreased urination, sudden weight gain or weight loss, fluid retention, swelling, shortness of breath, muscle cramps, tiredness, weakness, dizziness, confusion, and irregular heart rhythm. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids if you develop diarrhea or vomiting during treatment with these medications, as dehydration can also affect the kidney. Food may reduce the absorption of alendronate, which may lead to lower blood levels of the medication and possibly reduced effectiveness. You should take alendronate first thing in the morning, at least 30 minutes before you eat or drink anything or take any other medication. Take each dose with a full glass (6 to 8 ounces) of water, and use only plain water (not mineral or vitamin water). Do not take alendronate if you cannot sit upright or stand for at least 30 minutes. Because alendronate can cause irritation and ulcer in the stomach or esophagus (the tube that connects your mouth and stomach), you will need to stay upright for at least 30 minutes after taking this medication. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have questions on how to take this or other medications you are prescribed. Do not use alcohol or medications that contain alcohol while you are receiving treatment with codeine. This may increase nervous system side effects such as drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, difficulty concentrating, and impairment in thinking and judgment. In severe cases, low blood pressure, respiratory distress, fainting, coma, or even death may occur. With certain long-acting formulations of narcotic pain medication, consumption of alcohol may also cause rapid release of the drug, resulting in high blood levels that may be potentially lethal. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have questions on how to take this or other medications you are prescribed. Do not use more than the recommended dose of codeine, and avoid activities requiring mental alertness such as driving or operating hazardous machinery until you know how the medication affects you.
