Usual Adult Dose for Iron Deficiency Anemia

For iron deficiency anemia in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD):

Initial: Parenteral: 510 mg (17 ml) as a single intravenous injection followed by a second 510 mg intravenous injection 3 to 8 days later.

Maintenance: The recommended ferumoxytol dose may be readministered to patients with persistent or recurrent iron deficiency anemia.

Precautions

Safety and effectiveness have not been established in pediatric patients (less than 18 years of age).

Dialysis

Hemodialysis: Ferumoxytol should be administered once the blood pressure is stable and the patient has completed at least one hour of hemodialysis. The patient should be monitored for signs and symptoms of hypotension following each ferumoxytol injection.

Other Comments

Ferumoxytol is administered as an undiluted intravenous injection delivered at a rate of up to 1 mL/sec (30 mg/sec). Each 1 mL of ferumoxytol contains 30 mg of elemental iron.

The hematologic response (hemoglobin, ferritin, iron, and transferrin saturation) should be evaluated at least one month following the second ferumoxytol injection.
