Usual Adult Dose for Obesity

For short-term use in the management of exogenous obesity:

Immediate release tablets: 25 mg 3 times a day, 1 hour before meals, and in mid evening if needed to cover overnight hunger.

Controlled release tablets: 75 mg once a day, swallowed whole, in the morning.

Over 16 years of age:
For short-term use in the management of exogenous obesity:

Precautions

Use of this drug is contraindicated in patients with pulmonary hypertension, advanced arteriosclerosis, hyperthyroidism, glaucoma, or severe hypertension. Use of the drug is also contraindicated in patients who are in agitated states or in patients with a history of drug abuse.

Caution is recommended in prescribing diethylpropion for use in patients with hypertension or with symptomatic cardiovascular disease, including arrhythmias.

Epileptics receiving diethylpropion should be monitored closely.

Since safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients below the age of 16 have not been established, diethylpropion hydrochloride is not recommended for use in pediatric patients 16 years of age and under.
