Definition: an enzyme that reversibly converts xylulose to xylitol using either NADH (d-xylulose reductase) or NADPH (l-xylulose reductase); a deficiency of the l form is seen in patients with essential pentosuria.
Synonym(s): xylitol dehydrogenase
