Definition: slow-twitch muscle in which small dark “red” muscle fibers predominate; myoglobin is abundant and great numbers of mitochondria occur, characterized by slow, sustained (tonic) contraction. Contrast with white muscle.
Examples: glitazone, GI cocktail, etc.
