Definition: trivial name for carotenoids exhibiting qualitatively the biologic activity of β-carotene, vitamin A precursors (α-, β-, and γ-carotene and cryptoxanthin); contained in fish liver oils, spinach, carrots, egg yolk, milk products, and other green leaf or yellow vegetables and fruits.
