Definition: gene present in increased amounts in association with malignancies such as breast, kidney, and ovarian cancer; present in 20–30% of invasive breast carcinomas. Her 2/neu protein overexpression has been shown to be an adverse prognostic indicator. Its presence is also used as a predictive marker for response to herceptin therapy.
