Pronunciation: ep′i-ba′ti-dēn
Definition: A toxic alkaloid extracted from the skin of a South American frog, Epipedobates tricolor. Apparently derived from particular insects consumed in the Amazon basin. The crude extract has been used as an arrow poison by native hunters; exerts analgesia by a mechanism other than activation of opiate receptors or cyclooxygenase inhibition.
