Definition: a modification of direct anastomosis whereby one or both tubular structures are spatulated beforehand, thus creating an ellipse of greater cross-sectional as well as circumferential dimension than would be possible with a bevelled or circular anastomosis.
Examples: glitazone, GI cocktail, etc.
