Definition: finding that characterizes a protein that initiates final stage of cell death known as apoptosis. Mammalian families of proteins that execute the apoptotic pathway are Bcl-2, Apaf-1, and caspase-3. FAS receptor-ligand system is a regulator of apoptotic cell death.
