Definition: functional obstruction at the level of the upper esophageal sphincter due to failure of relaxation of the cricopharyngeal muscle; often associated with a pharyngoesophageal diverticulum.
Synonym(s): achalasia of the upper sphincter, hypertensive upper esophageal sphincter
