carnitine palmitoyltransferase
Definition: an enzyme that reversibly forms acylcarnitines and coenzyme A from carnitine and acylcoenzyme A (often, palmitoyl-CoA); important in fatty acid oxidation. Deficiency of isozyme I results in ketogenesis with hypoglycemia; deficiency of isozyme II affects primarily skeletal muscle.
