candidal esophagitis
Definition: infection of the esophageal mucosae by Candida albicans leading to painful and difficult swallowing. White plaques adherent to the mucosa are typically seen; frequently affects immunocompromised patients or those receiving broad-spectrum antibiotics; diagnosed by endoscopic brushing, mucosal biopsy, or both.
