Pronunciation: byū′tān
Definition: a gaseous hydrocarbon present in natural gas; two isomers are known, both of which are anesthetically active: N-butane is CH3(CH2)2CH3 and isobutane is CH3CH(CH3)CH3 (or 2-methylpropane).
Examples: glitazone, GI cocktail, etc.
