Definition: one of the causes of vascular dementia, in which there are many infarcts and lacunae in the white matter, with relative sparing of the cortex and basal ganglia.
Synonym(s): Binswanger encephalopathy, encephalitis subcorticalis chronica, subcortical arteriosclerotic encephalopathy
