autoimmune hepatitis

 

Definition: chronic liver disease of unknown etiology characterized by histologic presence of periportal hepatitis with plasma cell infiltration, hypergammaglobulinemia, and presence of autoantibodies in the serum. The disease has a female predilection and is highly responsive to immunosuppressive therapy.
