Definition: affected patients present with sudden onset of intense and disabling vertigo. The vertigo is paroxysmal, aggravated by head movement, and associated with nausea and vomiting. The patient exhibits horizontal or torsional nystagmus or mixed horizontotorsional nystagmus.
