Medications for Immune Thrombocytopenia

Other names: Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura; ITP

Medically reviewed by Carmen Pope, BPharm. Last updated on Mar 13, 2024.

Medications that may be used to treat immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) include steroids (such as prednisone or dexamethasone); immune globulin intravenous (IGIV) (Privigen); RHo D immune globulin (WinRho SDF); medications that help the bone marrow make more platelets (such romiplostim [Nplate], eltrombopag [Promacta], and avatrombopag [Doptelet] and other medications that increase platelet counts by preventing the immune system damage such as  rituximab (RiabniRituxan, Ruxience, Truxima). Newer agents include fostamatinib (Tavalisse) which may be used to treat ITP in those who haven't responded to other treatments. Other immunosuppressive agents may also be used off-label, such as azathioprine (Azasan, Imuran) and cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune).
