Medications used to treat active Crohn’s disease are called induction therapies. These are used to get you well quickly and into remission by reducing inflammation in your digestive tract. Induction treatments are usually fast-acting and taken for a short period (often 6-8 weeks), although some may be continued as maintenance treatments. Examples of induction treatments include aminosalicylates, such as sulfasalazine, mesalamine, olsalazine, and balsalazide; corticosteroids, such as prednisone and methylprednisolone; antibiotics; biologics such as adalimumab, certolizumab, infliximab, infliximab-dyyb, natalizumab, risankizumab-rzaa, ustekinumab, vedolizumab, and others
Aminosalicylates (5-ASA) – help to decrease inflammation in the lining of the GI tract and are effective for mild-to-moderate episodes of Crohn’s disease and as a maintenance treatment to prevent disease relapse. Examples include sulfasalazine (Azulfidine), mesalamine (Apriso, Pentasa), olsalazine (Dipentum), balsalazide (Colazal)
Corticosteroids – these suppress the immune system and are used for moderate to severely active Crohn's disease. Examples include prednisone and methylprednisolone
Antibiotics for abscesses and fistulas within the gastrointestinal tract caused by bacteria
