Medications for Hashimoto's disease (Chronic Lymphocytic Thyroiditis)

Medically reviewed by Carmen Pope, BPharm. Last updated on Feb 29, 2024.

Hashimoto's disease is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks the thyroid gland leading to the death of cells in the thyroid that produce hormones. Treatments replace missing thyroid hormone and include levothyroxine (such as Ermeza, Levoxyl, Synthroid, Tirosint-Sol, and Unithyroid) and desicated thyroid hormone (such as Armour-Thyroid, Nature-Thyroid, or Westhroid).

  • Levothyroxine may also be called L-thyroxine or T4.
  • Hashimoto's disease may also be called chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, and it is the most common cause of hypothyroidism. It may occur in all ages; however, it most commonly affects middle-aged women.
