Coumadin (warfarin) for Prevention of Thromboembolism in Atrial Fibrillation "I was at a convention in Palm Springs when I was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. Could not breathe, excruciating pain, scared to death. When I got to the ER my heart was beating at 180 beats per minute. The doctors told me the only thing that probably saved me from having a stroke was that I was already on Coumadin as I have a genetic blood disorder, factor 5 Leiden which means I will be on Coumadin for the rest of my life. My doctors are so cautious that they actually had a bird's nest inserted into my vena cava just in case a clot were to ever break lose. I have never had problems in the 6 years I have been on Coumadin. My INR is always at 2.5 which is considered perfect since my target range is between 2.0 and 3.0."

Coumadin (warfarin) for Prosthetic Heart Valves, Mechanical Valves - Thrombosis Prophylaxis "I have a St Jude mitral valve prosthesis implanted 11/2002. I began anticoagulation therapy with Coumadin without any difficulty and a stable INR. Insurance company switched me to a generic warfarin with terrible results - headaches, unstable INR including emergency need for stomach shots to restore INR levels rapidly. My cardiologist switched me back to the brand only - Coumadin and for the past 16 years, I'm now 75 years, I have taken the same dosage with no negative side effects and a consistently stable INR averaging 2.5 for a therapeudic range of 2.0 - 3.0. Now Coumadin has been discontinued by Bristol Myers Squibb with no notice or explanation leaving me and others with no choice but to use generic warfarin. Why is this allowed to happen and why are we constantly told there is no difference between the brand and the generic when for a large number of patients this is simply not true. Will anyone help us?"

Coumadin (warfarin) for Prosthetic Heart Valves, Mechanical Valves - Thrombosis Prophylaxis "Coumadin is the only drug that has worked for me in 23 years and NOW IT IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE because of Warfarin I had to be shocked back to life 3 times. Now I have been on put on Jantoven since June 22 2020 because I can no longer get Coumadin ... since then I have lost weight and appetite along with a bad cough with yellowed goop WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO? How has this happeden? when a drug works for people and then it is JUST STOPPED with no notice and the drugs that are available DON'T WORK then what?"

Coumadin (warfarin) for Deep Vein Thrombosis, First Event "I am male, 62 year old. Got a blood clot the entire length of my saphenous vein. I was put on generic warfarin first at 2.5mg/day. I got sweaty, headachy, and felt depressed. This went on for two weeks until I read reviews about Coumadin on this site. Switched to Coumadin. INR stabilized, sweats went away, and headaches went away in about 10 days. I know that Coumadin and Warfarin are supposed to be chemically the same molecule. I propose that the objective differences between these two drugs most likely can be accounted for by considering that one may have more pure isomers than the other."

Coumadin (warfarin) for Prevention of Thromboembolism in Atrial Fibrillation "Developed atrial flutter then atrial fibrillation several years post-op. This and beta-blocker really straightened it out. Cardiologist took me off Coumadin a few years ago for a month. He had to put me back on it due to flutter that just wouldn't quit... took a few weeks to straighten me out again. It was his idea, not mine. Only drawback is monitoring amount of green vegetables eaten every day and need a PT drawn every 2 weeks or so."

Coumadin (warfarin) for Deep Vein Thrombosis, Recurrent Event "I really do not like taking medications so I probably don't monitor it like I should. So far I have had no problems develop but it works effectively and side effects are minimal. Some cuts barely bleed while a small scratch may take awhile to stop depending on where the cut or scratch occurs. I have found that Coumadin regulates better than other warfarin but costs considerably more. "

For Prevention of Thromboembolism in Atrial Fibrillation "As a result of a stroke and AF I was put on Warfarin ten years ago. Apart from some bruising and keeping track of my INR I have no probs. For convenience my doctor has recently changed me to Eliquis but I’m not happy with it. Side affects: loss of appetite, dry mouth , incontinence, dizziness, tiredness. I’ll be going back to my doctor."

For Pulmonary Embolism, Recurrent Event "I have multi Blood Clots in both Lungs. I've been on Warfarin 5mg since Mar 2012, prior to that I had a blood clot in one lung back in 2007 following surgery. My experience has been devastating like a walking Time Boom. I'm Alive thanks to my Doctors and my meds. My INR ranges 2.0 / 3.2 I now get my Pro-Time check once monthly. However I'll be on warfarin for the rest of my Life. Just have to be extra careful on any other meds my Doctor puts me on."

For Pulmonary Embolism, Recurrent Event "I was first diagnosed with Pulmonary Embolism in 9/2007 and was on Warfarin for 3-6 months. Over the next 2-3 years I would get blood clots in the legs but never too serious again. Then in Late March 2010 Guess what was back, you guessed it Pulmonary Embolism. I was told this time that I would have to take this medicine for the rest of my life. I am only 39 years old and I feel so helpless that I have this happen to me. But I am alive and I will do what I need to do to stay that way....Please don't ignore the symptoms."

Coumadin (warfarin) for Deep Vein Thrombosis, Recurrent Event "Was on Coumadin for 4 years. Walked away due to headaches daily. Got another clot. It may have been worth the couple months of no headaches, no fussy head, no feeling stupid, loosing my sight (which is old age, but still the timing), but the anxiety of knowing my body will clot along with a new clot put me back on Coumadin. Finally got the news about Xarelto. Life changing to say the least. No way to reverse dose, I take the risk for a better life. Besides the half life is only 5 to 9 hours for under 45 yr old and 11 to 13 hours for older. Take it with dinner and you are sleeping that whole time."

Coumadin (warfarin) for Deep Vein Thrombosis, First Event "Put on Coumadin in 2008 after DVT, which ultimately turned out to have been caused by a hereditary clotting disorder (Factor V Leiden). No problems or side effects since, works like a charm. I self test every 2 weeks with Roche PT/INR handheld blood test kit, and manage to stay in therapeutic range about 95% of the time. Couldn’t ask for much better!"

Coumadin (warfarin) for Prosthetic Heart Valves, Mechanical Valves - Thrombosis Prophylaxis "I had open heart surgery in 1973. A Bjork Shiley Steal Cage Ball Valves was implanted. I had some problems in the following years because of blood clots. I was put on the medication Coumadin and the problem was resolved. Jump forward to 2012. My insurance would not cover the medication, so my Doctors and I tried to switch to a generic (Warfarin). I was having complications with the Warfarin, so I was instructed to stay on "Name Brand" Coumadin and to never attempt to change to a generic again. Now Bristol Myers Squibb has discontinued making "Name Brand" Coumadin; therefore, I am being forced to make that change. When my supply runs out I will have to make that forced change! By the way the BMS manufacturer which supplied the USA is located in Puerto Rico. There is another location which supplies France, Germany, and Italy, but BMS will not tell me where it is and/or how to get the drug from them, where ever they are. Can anyone help me, any suggestions?"

Jantoven (warfarin) for Prosthetic Heart Valves, Mechanical Valves - Thrombosis Prophylaxis "I have a mechanical aortic valve and have been prescribed warfarin sodium to control clotting. I have used warfarin sodium for over 20 years but was given Jantoven recently as substitute but it caused my INR to be difficult to stabilize. Why is Jantoven different than warfarin sodium?"

For Pulmonary Embolism, First Event "Have been on warfarin for about 10 years now ever since being in a coma for 2 weeks on life support on the verge of death from 3 blood clots in my left lung. I don't remember being told if I had had a stroke or not, but upon coming out of the coma, my hands, arms, and, legs were paralyzed and upon being medically stabilized was sent to rehab to regain the use of my limbs. Warfarin has its drawbacks of constant monitoring, but it has served me well, and though there are newer anticoagulants on the market that they say don't require the testing, I just would not trust them to be consistent with the job they were supposed to be doing, so I would rather stay on warfarin with the testing for a monitoring process. That's just the way I see it. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

For Antiphospholipid Syndrome "I found this today be a lifesaver, but at the same time it has cut years off what life I had. I have aged faster, have little energy to do things, my INR is not very stable, my memory is not what it once was (I used to be called a walking phonebook/dictionary by my ex), etc. Now all of these things MAY be attributed to something else, but I have my sincere doubts."

For Deep Vein Thrombosis, First Event "I did not realize that warfarin would have this side effect of hair loss. I take 15 mg three times a week, and ten milligrams for four days. My hair has not come out in clumps; however, I do notice my scalp. This is my 5.5 years if Coumadin and Lovenox. I started when I was 34 and now 40...for life. I hope I do not lose clumps, but I mask it with a hair cut...just tell myself I am taking rat poison. I am allergic to all the new drugs. Doing better than most of you, but when I developed a blood clot in my underarm and two veins deep in my chest...no surgery...took 2 years to actually eliminate the clot, but destroyed my left side of my body"

For Prosthetic Heart Valves, Mechanical Valves - Thrombosis Prophylaxis "I started warfarin in 2002 so been on Warfarin nearly 20 years , I get tested every 7-10 days , my INR changes like the wind , but have learned to live with it and sometimes change my own dose if I'm drinking"

For Deep Vein Thrombosis, First Event "This drug works well, but must be monitored very carefully and taken as prescribed. I have been on this drug for blood clots in my legs and after surgery it has been prescribed as a preventative measure. My mother has been on this drug for about 17 years as a preventative measure for strokes after having a mechnicial heart valve. As she has gotten older, the tendancy for her has been difficulties controlling INR at the recommended level. If you have any bleeding while on this drug get to the doctor. Do not ignore it thinking it will pass AND be careful with what you eat and drink as this will impact how the drug works."

For Pulmonary Embolism, Recurrent Event "I was 39 years old at my first clot after surgery. I went off Coumadin after a year. Then had a pulmonary embolism and was put back on Coumadin. My INRs had great fluctuations. I now have my own home Coagucheck and adjust my Coumadin with a Dr's supervision and no clot since. I have had side effects but no clots since then."

For Prevention of Thromboembolism in Atrial Fibrillation "Have been on Warfarin for nearly 7 years. My INR is usually between 2 and 3 which it’s supposed to be. Due to circumstances it has fluctuated between 3.1 and 1.8 recently. This is due to a change in diet and activity levels because of serious family medical issues. So I say to you, it really does matter a lot what you do. The other thing is that I get large purple-red bruises on the top of my hands & arms."

For Pulmonary Embolism, First Event "Warfarin has dangerous side effects, but is indicated in life threatening situations. It can be taken as prescribed for a period following a pulmonary embolism, but the patient must take extra care not to fall, bruise, or cut oneself, because warfarin inhibits clotting. It saved my life."

For Antiphospholipid Syndrome "This condition led to a stroke for me, so this medicine has been a lifesaver and has given me peace of mind. I also have a great Doctor and nurse in his office who has guided me through the proper use when needed and I even test my own INR."
