Bactrim DS (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "I found that within a day of taking Bactrim the infection got better, which was GREAT because I had had it for a while. I experienced a few side effects, dizziness, lack of energy, insomnia if I took the pill a few hours before bed (I found to overcome this I took the pill just before going to sleep) and headaches but they seemed to dissipate after 2-3 days."

Bactrim DS (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "I have been taking Bactrim DS for an infection in my toe from a pedicure. It's been 4 days of not feeling human. I'm terribly exhausted. It feels like trying to stay awake after taking NyQuil. After day 2 I started getting bad headaches. I'm only on it for seven days so I'm going to suffer through it but the side effects are almost unbearable."

Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "I am taking Bactrim for a minor staph infection on my leg. It is going away quickly. I am just experiencing fatigue and headaches. The headaches are probably due to dehydration because I am a runner too. I felt better after I drank more water with the medicine. Also I am experiencing a slight decrease in appetite."

Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "Worst part of this was the size of the pill. Had to buy a pill cutter. Otherwise, it did make me a little moody and anxious but I did not have any other major symptoms. Took for 7 days for staph infection on skin."

"I went to my doctor for a boil on my face and another on my lower lip. He prescribed Sulfamethoxazole TMP DS . I started it on a Monday and by Tuesday morning, positive changes started to occur. The boil on my face stopped oozing and the one on my lip stopped growing/being so painful. The good thing was, my doctor prescribed the correct medication and secondly, it started working right away. I took 2 tablets as soon as I got the script from the pharmacy to raise the level of this antibiotic in my bloodstream quickly. Then 1 tablet every 12 hrs of Sulfamethoxazole TMP DS for 10 days. Not many positive reviews of this med on this site, but after taking this for 4 days, my sores continue to heal and look better each day that passes I have zero side effects. No rashes, bumps, insomnia, etc. No idea why others have experienced so many negative effects. I am very pleased w/ this antibiotic."

Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "I was very hesitant to take this drug after reading the reviews online. Indeed, I was prescribed it for a bacterial skin infection. However, it did little to nothing to eliminate my infection. On day 1 of taking it, I started getting minor headaches. Every time I took a dose after that it made my headache even worse. It just felt like I was putting something harmful in my body. If you're ever in a situation where you are prescribed it (and it's not a life or death situation), tell your doctor no. Do it it for your own body's sake."

Bactrim DS (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "I was diagnosed with a MRSA Impetigo skin infection and was prescribed the Bactrim DS as well as Bactroban ointment, therefore I cannot know which helped the most, but it did work 95%. I stll have a pink area and the original cut that started this all is still slightly visible. This oral med made me feel horrible. Everyday, after the third day, I was nauseous about an hour after taking it and several times had to take Zofran 8mg which did help. My stomach was a roller coaster and the headaches were really bad. I have Daily Chronic Headache which is daily migraines. But I get C spine nerve ablations which allows me to be 90% migraine free for about 1 year. During the 10 days the migraines came back and with a vengence. Glad to be done."

Bactrim DS (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "Not sure that the medication did much as my abscess burst the night I started the antibiotics. All I know is that by the 3rd and 4th day of antibiotics I was feeling generally unwell, had a headache and awful nausea."

Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "Took bactrim 4 days for skin infection then quit due to not sleeping or being able to eat, I drank plenty of water but ended up feeling like my head was going to explode, joints aching, vision blurry, felt like I was being poisoned. The doctor said to continue taking just make sure you eat I let them know I was not able to eat, so I quit on my own nobody's going to know what is going on with their body better than themselves and it was just poisoning me. Three days after stopping Bactrim I have rash all over body and a week later still feel like my head is going to explode, very tired and vision blurry. Doctors put on my file to never take again as I am allergic to it"

Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "The 4th day of taking it (along with Cephalexin) for a wound on my ankle that became inflamed and appeared infected. I’m currently recovering from the 4th anxiety and depression episode in my life (I’m 53) so have to keep that in mind. This drug doesn’t affect my GI system at all. I am taking a probiotic with it. What it does do is increase my anxiety and depression which I experience as hot flushes, sweating, pounding heart, gloominess. It is distressing. I am trying to push thru because it is helping the wound heal. But if you are one of us folks who suffers anxiety and/or depression, please just be aware that it may exacerbate your symptoms."

"Worst medicine ever. I'm not allergic to anything by the way. I was prescribed for a uti and had to stop after 5 days. Migraines, eyeballs throbbed, chest was in excruciating pain, neck pain, upper and lower back pain, stomach and ovary pin, and leg pain, especially in the knees, onto of of that, nausea, loss of appetite, dizziness, the immediate and random need to throw up, and worst of all...a red rash all over my body. To top that off, and loss of sex drive. I have never had an allergic reaction to a medicine before...I will never take this again. BEWARE!!!!"

Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "My husband was prescribed Bactrim in late April 2009 for what the dr thought was MRSA. Results came back negative and was told to continue taking it. 4-7 days into his antibiotic and his gums bled after brushing his teeth...then his hands turned purple from pushing the lawn mower and under his arms he had petechiae. He was bleeding internally and he had a platelet count of 1,000 (he was very close to death and we didn't know it). The bactrim had caused the low platelet count which means the blood can't clot. He had to have 2 transfusions and then caught Meningitis as well. Bactrim is a very strong antibiotic; use with caution."

Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "I had an ingrown toe nail so my pod. removed it & put me on cephalexin for a week. After taking all of them my toe was still infected. She put me on Bactrim to be taken twice a day for 10 days. 24 hours after my first dose my mood completely changed I was depressed & miserable. Day2 I was spinning it was impossible to function for daily tasks, & I had no appetite. Day 3 had a full blown panic attack then extreme anxiety & following that several heart palpitations. Day6 I had a rash across my midsection. I stopped taking them that day and called my pod. as my toe still wasn't getting better. She advised I stop & see her later on that day. She wound up removing another piece of nail that had been left behind. When I told her all of the symptoms she said that I'm allergic. As a person who suffers from food allergies this terrified me. After a week the nausea, headache & spinning started to lighten up but it took around two months to get back to my normal routine. And to think...these symptoms are NORMAL for this medication."

Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "I've taken Bactrim in the past, usually just have gastrointestinal issues. This time, beginning day 3 of 7 I felt like I was hypoglycemic, nervous, jittery, anxious, and like my heart was racing. Day 6 of 7 my resting heart rate was 142, anxiety so bad I was crying. I called the hospital that prescribed it and the nurses spoke to "talked to TWO doctors and NEVER heard of ANYTHING like that" I said "never mind that it's listed under severe side effects right?" I stopped taking it then (Dr said I could keep taking it or stop, it doesn't matter) 24 hours later, I'm back to normal. Resting heart rate is 83. I'll never take Bactrim again."

Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "Hello from the ER here.. ugh this medicine is the absolute worst I’ve ever experienced in my life. I know everyone is different but my experience was brutal! Horrible dizziness, nausea, anxiety thru the roof, chills, sweats, memory loss. I literally freaked out on the nurse helping me.. “I screamed I’m having a stroke!” It was like something came over me. Like an out of body sensation. I got really dizzy and it went blurry.. scary symptoms to have!! Hopefully nothing lingers. My doctor has to look up side effects bc he said he didn’t know of many and was surprised to find nervousness, psychosis and hallucinations being possible. Freaky experience! So now I am out on clindamycin for the mrsa."

Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "I was just prescribed this antibiotic today due to a staph infection in each leg from shaving. My doctor mentioned MSRA, needless to say I'm freaking out over this. Regardless, it's been about 4 hours since I took the first pill - obviously the infection sites haven't gotten any better, but I'm hoping they do. As far as side effects go, I'm lucky so far to only have a little bit of heartburn and slight nausea/loss of appetite. I'm crossing my fingers this stuff works for me!"

Bactrim DS (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "Gahh. I’m on day 4 for a staph infection. Went from waking up ready to face the day head on, feeling 90% better than I was earlier in the week. But I took my pill and here I am, back in bed. I can’t help but wonder if the awful side effects is the die off reaction of the bacteria"

Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "I was prescribed Bactrim after having an abscess on my leg drained. I started feeling horrible immediately. Joint pain, nausea, loss of appetite, high fevers. I ended up in the hospital for 3 days for drug fever, and am still feeling the effects a week after coming home. I would not suggest taking this."

"I was recently exposed to MRSA. (hazards of my job) Few days later, I woke up to my right eye swollen shut and oozing yellow pus. Whites of eye was red. I immediately went to Urgent Care. They squeezed out a sample from my eyeball to send to the lab. In the meantime, they expressed concern that it was either MRSA or a really bad case of pink eye. I am being treated for both right now. The medication proved to be a miracle - its killing the infection in my eye. Swelling went down, minimal pus coming out as of this morning, red is now pink - just over 24 hrs after starting the medication. I have had no side affects from the medication."

Bactrim DS (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "Eczema on fingers of both hands became infected after several months of me failing to control the eczema on my own. Doc prescribed Bactrim DS twice a day for ten days. Worked very quickly and my fingers looked 90% healed after two days, but unfortunately I had to discontinue Bactrim after I had severe anxiety, insomnia, severe tension headaches, hand trembling, neck muscle soreness, and heart palpitations. I made it 4 days before I decided to switch to something else. Had side effects not been as severe, this would have been a 10/10 for me for how quickly it fixed my skin. No diarrhea, nausea or GI issues for me."

Bactrim DS (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "This was my first time taking Bactrim because I’m allergic to penicillin. I had a infection in my big toe due to an ingrown toenail. I give three stars because it did work to clear up the infection. However on day seven I began having severe reaction to the drug. Excruciating pain my feet knees and hips combined with head to toe rash and itching. I took Benadryl and prednisone and still took several days to go away. The stuff is horrible. The pain in my joints and lower leg bones was unbearable. Never again."

Sulfatrim (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "Prescribed Sulfatrim for skin infection. Took 1 pill and began to feel body aches and pains and felt chilled with fever and flu like. Woke up in the morning drenched in sweat with severe pain in my side radiating to my tail bone. Couldn't sit, couldn't stand and couldn't lie down. Agonizing pain in my joints. Took another pill as I did not realize it was the drug doing it. Felt like I might die. Went to doctors in agony. Told to stop taking and given another antibiotic. Was to sick too take the other antibiotic and too afraid. After a few days, the pain subsided but missed a week of work because of it. Cannot imagine what other damage it did. Will never, ever take again. I thought I would die on this drug."

Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "Prescribed Bactrim for boils on abdomen/legs. I was only able to take it for 3 days, due to the adverse reaction. The boils are much better (and I hope they don't come back), but the back pain, abdominal pain, nausea and diarrhea were enough to make me stop taking it. Plus, I'm not sure if this is a medicine of choice for anyone with ulcerative colitis, but now I'm having a huge flare of that! "
