PhytoMedical Releases Preliminary Research Results For New Class of Diabetes Compounds
PRINCETON, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sep 4, 2007 - PhytoMedical Technologies, Inc. (OTCBB:PYTO) (FWB:ET6), today announced preliminary results from recent low-dosage animal studies of the Company's compounds for type-2 diabetes. The compounds being tested are synthetic versions of the isolated active metabolite derived from cinnamon and potentially represent an entirely new class of compounds for the treatment of type-2 diabetes.A previously published human study of type-2 diabetes patients showed that the isolated active metabolite of cinnamon, a Type A1 polyphenol, can actually lower blood sugar by an average of 18 to 29 percent and total cholesterol by 12 to 26 percent. PhytoMedical has synthetically recreated these compounds, which are now being tested in low dosage animal studies. Successful study outcomes will allow PhytoMedical to progress its research, with the eventual goal being to file for an Investigational New Drug application with the FDA which, if approved, will allow the Company to initiate Phase 1 human studies.
To evaluate the anti-diabetic effects of the new compounds, diabetes-induced male mice were fed ad libitum and administered low doses of several new PhytoMedical diabetes compounds. Despite low dosage, results of blood glucose and glucose tolerance tests showed activity comparable to what would be seen from already approved diabetes compounds.
"Our preliminary results of recent animal studies mark a major milestone in our product development pathway and lend credence to the platform from which our synthesized compounds are designed," stated Mr. Greg Wujek, President and CEO of PhytoMedical Technologies, Inc. "Our goal is to further evaluate our compounds at higher doses and continue to move closer to our Investigational New Drug application with the Food and Drug Administration."
PhytoMedical's Synthetic Compounds: Modeling 'Natural' Success
PhytoMedical is developing an entirely new, innovative class of diabetes compounds that are patterned after polyphenols found in cinnamon, shown in numerous published studies to favorably affect type-2 diabetes.
A human study of type-2 diabetes patients published in Diabetes Care, a journal of the American Diabetes Association, showed that cinnamon-derived polyphenolic compounds can significantly lower blood sugar by an average of 18 to 29 percent, triglycerides (fatty acids in the blood) by 23 to 30 percent, LDL (or "bad") cholesterol by 7 to 27 percent and total cholesterol by 12 to 26 percent. Changes in HDL ("good") cholesterol were not significant. Most importantly, no side effects were reported in the study.
Subsequently, an independent three-year study of human patients carried out by the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, reported similar findings related to lower blood sugar levels.
More recently, in animal studies, third-party research published in Diabetologia, the official journal of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, have confirmed that cinnamon-derived compounds are able to significantly reduce blood glucose levels with no apparent side effects.
Despite widely-acknowledged benefits attributed to these compounds, they are often considered unsuitable for prolonged clinical or therapeutic application due to the general lack of consistency in dosage, potency, composition, and stability of natural-occurring compounds.
In response, PhytoMedical is working to create synthetic 'copies' of the natural molecule responsible for cinnamon's anti-diabetic effect.
