NovaBay Researcher Contributes Important Article to Pharmaceutical Formulation & Quality Magazine
The article notes "infectious diseases remain a leading cause of death worldwide despite available therapies. The reasons are increasing resistance of old, common pathogens--such as S. aureus--to available therapies and increasing prominence of uncommon pathogens due to the proliferation of immunocompromised patients." The article also discusses the fact that Staph aureus colonizes about 30% of humans and can go on for years without causing symptoms to develop. "Colonized individuals are at significantly higher risk of developing an MRSA infection after suffering a wound as innocuous as a scratch. Perhaps more importantly, colonization serves as a reservoir for infection, transmission, and further development of resistance by S. aureus to antimicrobial agents."
The article also reviews several currently available therapeutic options for treating MRSA, all of which "have caveats," including decreased effectiveness and toxicity concerns. The article discussed NovaBay's NVC-422 compound, named "Aganocides," currently in development. It notes that recently completed NVC-422 studies showed that the compound was safe and well tolerated when applied to the nostrils, and also noted that Phase IIa exploratory studies are currently underway this year.
"NovaBay is honored that the editors of Pharmaceutical Formulation and Quality Magazine chose to publish this important article highlighting how NovaBay's research is leading the way against the challenge of antibiotic resistance," said Dr. Ron Najafi, CEO of NovaBay. "We believe that these stable antimicrobial compounds, trademarked as Aganocides, have the potential to become a first line weapon in the fight against such deadly pathogens as MRSA without developing resistant. NovaBay has partnered with two industry leaders, Alcon and Kinetic Concepts, who also recognize the potential our compounds have in attacking a wide range of infections."

About NovaBay Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
NovaBay Pharmaceuticals, Inc. is a biopharmaceutical company focused on developing innovative product candidates targeting the treatment or prevention of a wide range of infections in hospital and non-hospital environments. NovaBay has discovered and is developing a class of non-antibiotic anti-infective compounds, which it has named Aganocides, based upon small molecules generated by white blood cells that defend the body against invading pathogens. NovaBay believes that Aganocide compounds could form a platform on which to create a variety of products to address differing needs in the treatment and prevention of bacterial and viral infections, including MRSA. NovaBay has entered into a licensing and research collaboration agreement with an affiliate of Alcon, Inc. for use of the Aganocide compounds in the eye, ear and sinus, and in contact lens solutions. The company also has a license agreement with an affiliate of Kinetic Concepts, Inc. for the use of NovaBay's NeutroPhase product in wound care applications.
