Bio-Rad Laboratories to Host Third International Conference on TSEsInternational Scientific Experts to Discuss BSE, Scrapie and Chronic Wasting Disease
MARNES-LA-COQUETTE, France, November 24, 2003 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Bio-Rad Laboratories, Inc. , a multinational manufacturer and distributor of life science research products and clinical diagnostics, announced today that it will host its third international conference on Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSEs) on December 11, 2003 in Paris, France.

Comprehensive Conference Program To Focus On Latest Research, Diagnostics
The conference will open with presentations on the latest advancements in research on prions and new trends in TSE diagnostics. Scientific presentations will include the physiological role of the prion protein, the transconformation of PrP, abnormal PrP detection, antemortem identification of TSEs from serum using infrared spectroscopy and the search for surrogate markers. Scientific specialists presenting their research include Dr. Corinne Lasmezas (French Atomic Energy Commission), Prof. Detlev Riesner (University of Dusseldorf, Germany), Dr. Roy Jackman (U.K. Veterinary Laboratories Agency), Dr. Peter Lasch (Robert Koch Institute, Germany) and Dr. Jean-Philippe Deslys (French Atomic Energy Commission).
The conference will also feature three panel discussions on BSE, Scrapie and Chronic Wasting Disease, moderated by Dr. Jacques Grassi (Director of Pharmacology and Immunology at the French Atomic Energy Commission). The emergence of new strains of BSE will be explored by Dr. Angus Wear (U.K. Veterinary Laboratories Agency), Dr. Thierry Baron (French Food Safety Agency), Dr. Yokoyama (National Institute for Animal Health, Japan) and Dr. Sandra Honour (Agri-food Surveillance System Branch, Alberta Food Safety Division, Canada). New discoveries in Scrapie detection will be discussed by Dr. Danny Matthews (U.K. Veterinary Laboratories Agency), Dr. Sylvie Lafond Benestad (Veterinaerinstituttet, Norway), Dr. Thierry Baron (French Food Safety Agency) and Dr. Mark Hall (National Veterinary Service Laboratories, U.S. Department of Agriculture). Sharing their experiences and views on the implementation of rapid tests for the diagnosis of CWD in North America will be: Mr. Bruce Morrison (Nebraska Game and Parks Division, U.S.) and Dr. Sandra Honour (Agri-food Surveillance System Branch, Alberta Food Safety Division, Canada).
