Kayexalate Powder is used for:

Treating high potassium levels in the blood.

Kayexalate Powder is a potassium-removing resin. It works by exchanging sodium ions for potassium in the large intestine.

Do NOT use Kayexalate Powder if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Kayexalate Powder
  • you have low potassium levels in the blood
  • you are on a low salt diet

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Kayexalate Powder:

Some medical conditions may interact with Kayexalate Powder. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have swelling, congestive heart failure, or severe high blood pressure

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Kayexalate Powder. However, no specific interactions with Kayexalate Powder are known at this time.

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Kayexalate Powder may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.



How to use Kayexalate Powder:

Use Kayexalate Powder as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Do not take antacids (eg, calcium carbonate, magnesium hydroxide) within 4 hours of Kayexalate Powder.
  • Kayexalate Powder should be freshly prepared with one fourth of a glass of water or syrup. Do not store the mixed solution for more than 24 hours.
  • Shake well before taking a dose.
  • Drinking extra fluids while you are taking Kayexalate Powder is recommended. Check with your doctor for instructions.
  • Do not heat Kayexalate Powder.
  • Kayexalate Powder can be taken orally, as an enema, or through a plastic feeding tube.
  • If you miss a dose of Kayexalate Powder, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Important safety information:

  • Follow the dietary plan provided by your doctor.
  • Do not use a salt substitute or other potassium supplement without checking with your doctor.
  • LAB TESTS, including electrolyte levels, may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
  • Kayexalate Powder is not recommended for use in NEWBORNS with decreased stomach or intestinal motility. Kayexalate Powder is not recommended for use in CHILDREN younger than 2 months of age. Safety and effectiveness in this age group have not been confirmed.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Kayexalate Powder during pregnancy. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you are using Kayexalate Powder, check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.

Possible side effects of Kayexalate Powder:

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Appetite loss; constipation; nausea; upset stomach; vomiting.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); change in emotions, mood, or behavior; change in heartbeat; muscle cramps; swelling of the feet or hands; unexplained muscle weakness.

If OVERDOSE is suspected:

Contact 1-800-222-1222 (the American Association of Poison Control Centers), your local poison control center (http://www.aapcc.org), or emergency room immediately.

Proper storage of Kayexalate Powder:

Store Kayexalate Powder at room temperature, between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Brief storage at temperatures between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted. Keep Kayexalate Powder out of the reach of children and away from pets.
