Treating mild to moderate itching, redness, and swelling caused by certain skin conditions.

Desonate Gel is a topical corticosteroid. It works by reducing skin inflammation (redness, swelling, itching, and irritation).

Do NOT use Desonate Gel if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Desonate Gel

Before using Desonate Gel:

Some medical conditions may interact with Desonate Gel. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have any kind of skin infection, ulcers, cuts, scrapes, or lessened blood flow to your skin
  • if you have measles, tuberculosis (TB), a positive TB skin test, chickenpox, or shingles, or if you have recently had a vaccination
  • if you are taking an oral corticosteroid (eg, prednisone)

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Desonate Gel. Because little, if any, of Desonate Gel is absorbed into the blood, the risk of it interacting with another medicine is low.

Ask your health care provider if Desonate Gel may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.



How to use Desonate Gel:

Use Desonate Gel as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Wash your hands before using Desonate Gel.
  • Apply a thin layer of Desonate Gel to cover the affected area as directed by your doctor. Gently rub the medicine in until it is evenly distributed.
  • Wash your hands immediately after applying Desonate Gel, unless your hands are part of the treated area.
  • Do not cover the treated area(s) with bandages or other dressings unless advised to do so by your health care provider.
  • If you miss a dose of Desonate Gel, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Desonate Gel.

Important safety information:

  • Desonate Gel is for external use only. Do not get it in your eyes, nose, or mouth. If you get it any of these areas, flush right away with cool tap water.
  • Do NOT use more than the recommended dose or use for longer than 4 weeks without checking with your doctor.
  • If your symptoms do not get better within 4 weeks or if they get worse, contact your doctor.
  • Talk with your doctor before you use any other medicines or cleansers on your skin.
  • Do not apply Desonate Gel over large areas of the body, to open wounds, or to scraped, infected, or burned skin without first checking with your doctor.
  • Do not use Desonate Gel for other skin conditions at a later time.
  • Do not use Desonate Gel to treat diaper rash in a child. Do not use Desonate Gel to treat the underarm or groin area of a child unless the child's doctor tells you to.
  • Check with your doctor before you receive any vaccine while you are using Desonate Gel.
  • Tell your doctor or dentist that you take Desonate Gel before you receive any medical or dental care, emergency care, or surgery.
  • Desonate Gel has a corticosteroid in it. Before you start any new medicine, check the label to see if it has a corticosteroid in it too. If it does or if you are not sure, check with your doctor or pharmacist.
  • Corticosteroids may affect growth rate in CHILDREN and teenagers in some cases. They may need regular growth checks while they use Desonate Gel.
  • Desonate Gel should be used with extreme caution in CHILDREN younger than 3 months old; safety and effectiveness in these children have not been confirmed.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Desonate Gel while you are pregnant. It is not known if Desonate Gel is found in breast milk after topical use. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you use Desonate Gel, check with your doctor. Discuss any possible risks to your baby.

Possible side effects of Desonate Gel:

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Mild, temporary itching or burning when first applied.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); acne-like rash; fever, chills, sore throat, or persistent cough; severe or persistent burning, irritation, redness, or swelling of the skin; thinning, softening, or discoloration of the skin.

If OVERDOSE is suspected:

Contact 1-800-222-1222 (the American Association of Poison Control Centers), your local poison control center ( http: / / www.aapcc.org / dnn / Resources / FindLocalPoisonCenters / tabid / 130 / Default.aspx), or emergency room immediately. Symptoms may include increased thirst or urination; muscle weakness; unusual weight gain, especially in the face.

Proper storage of Desonate Gel:

Store Desonate Gel at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C). Brief storage at temperatures between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted. Store in a tightly closed container. Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Keep Desonate Gel out of the reach of children and away from pets.
