I hear that some people on here has been diagnose with both. But I thought if you have general anxiety then anxiety in social situations is just one of the many areas you experience anxiety in.
Can you be diagnose with both general anxiety disorder and social anxiety disorder?

I think so too. I was diagnose with general anxiety and I display symptoms of social anxiety as well. My anti depressant hasn't worked yet and I'm about to go to college. I don't really have friends and I am extremely shy. I don't like to leave my house. I know what you mean when you say not fun.
NBA, hang in there friend. It DOES get better. How long have you been on this medication? Please know it can take several weeks to "kick in" so to speak. My doctor actually put me on xanax until my body was used to the anti-depressant, which was zoloft. It really helped. When I was in that dark place I thought I would never be different, but I got better, and you will too!!! :)

NBA,
In a prior question, you asked about drug interactions. Pq me if you want more of an informed answer.
I, too, have panic/anxiety and agoraphobia among other issues. Anxiety is anxiety. It just is, for whatever reason, panic attacks are something else. I understand that you are apprehensive about starting college. It's a world unto itself. You will meet many new people, some just like you.
If you aren't feeling better before school starts, make an appointment with your shrink to ask about Klonopin to take at night as it can make some people sleepy when taken in the morning. That may allay some of your anxiety. If, after you begin school, and are still unhappy, there are mental health counselors available to you on campus.
I wish you a wonderful time in your college years. Can be lots of fun.
Peace,
Sweet Hippie
I would do that but my family doctor is against benzos. I am going to have to wait until college to do that. To me personally I am at a point in my life where I don't care if I'm addicted to a med as long as it helps.
As best as I've been able to determine, shrinks are the predominant prescribers of Klonopin of clonazepam. It is a very long acting benzo.
It works longer and better for issues such as yours. Is it addictive, yes, bug my life would not be worth living without it. Can I taper and get off? Yes, but my symptoms return with a vengeance. It's not worth it to me. I've been on it more years than you've been alive.
Just saying,
Hippie

Hello. As the others said, yes you can. Actually generalized anxiety disorder has many subsets and social anxiety is one of those. The main idea is what you do to be treated. My hubby has this too. He was excellent in his major and asked to do grad school by his professor. When he had to student teach, his anxiety became too much. To this day, forty years later, he still regrets not having proper treatment so he could have fulfilled his burning desire for a career. You are very smart to see what you may need. Major universities and colleges have extensive mental health programs, for just this type of thing. As you head off to college, be sure to check it out. It can be your ticket to health and a great and successful future. Good luck to you. seek treatment as you can. You will be amazed how many others have this condition. Go for it!
Pledge. There is a book called the diagnostic manual for psychiatric disease. I have used it for Hera connected to my past training and business. Believe me when I say that generalized anxiety disorder has numerous subsets including phobias and whatall. Lots on line to read if you wish. Karen

Your answer helped. I was diagnose with general anxiety not social anxiety but I definitely have both. I have no friends just associates and I'm going to college next week. I know I have both and I hope the anti depressant I'm taking starts to work and help my social anxiety too. I don't have panic attacks though.
NBA, I know how you feel. I have been with anxiety and panic attacks most of my life and use to be very shy. This is suppose to be a happy time for you. However; starting college can be intimidating and stressful especially when you have no friends. Believe me once your antidepressant reachs it's full effect you should start feeling better. If by chance you need a benzodiazepine for short term, keep in mind that they are very habit forming so please take it for short term only. This soon shall pass.
What antidepressant are you taking and what are the milligrams also how long have you been on the a/d?
Best to you my friend ... pamee

I am taking effexor xr 75mg I have been taking it since July 25th.
NBA you may need a quick acting benzo. If you want to stay on it for long term, but one day you want to get off them you will need to taper very slow, cause the w/d are hell. If the your a/d doesn't start making you feel better soon get back to your doctor. Also wanted to say valium has the longest half life of all benzos.. hope all works out with you. Stay in touch to let us know how your doing.. private question me anytime you would like.
