Hi msmary, Apparently, there doesn't seem to be many medications for this condition. I attached an article for you to read about new studies under way. Has your doctor recommended the xanax for this? I would ask him/her about what dose you can take. It may help relax you but really doesn't diminish the "ringing" in the ear. It appears that masking the "noise" has been the most recommended "cure." I can't imagine how bothersome this condition can be!! Have you seen an Ear, Nose, Throat (ENT) specialist? I hope you find some useful information in this link. Good luck to you and sorry I couldn't help more.
