I have a spinal cord injury and nerve damage at the C7-C8. I had C5--C7 fusion done almost 3 years ago. I have not felt my index and middle finger in 4 years, and touching the simplest things sends me through the roof. My right arm is affected through use and pain constantly. I recently (Dec 2011) had a spinal cord stimulation implant done, and this offers very little relief, plus I cannot use it during any activity due to the intensity increasing with movement. I have been on my share of pain meds, but have yet to find anything effective. After reading reviews on hydromorphone, I am going to discuss this with my doctor. Please, if you have any input, I would love to hear it!
Will hydromorphone work for me?

Instead of talking to your regular doctor, you need to see a Pain Management Doctor. The new FDA/DEA rules don't allow most doctors to continue with pain therapy. They are not allow to write scripts for pain anymore unfortunately. Maybe one or two, but that would be it. It sounds like you need a constan pain reliever or sometimes they use differnt drugs like gabpentin or Lyrica for nerve pain. It can be quite effective if you don't get side effects. You will hear a lot of controversary about some of these, but it's a try it and see type of thing because everyone reacts differently Please don't go in & say I need this or that for pain or they think automatically you are a drug seeker. Again unfortuneatly, this is what our country has come to do to many pain scripts ending up on the street for drug seekers. You didn't say you live in the States, I just assumed. I wish you the best... Mary

Dear gail197, I agree with Mary, you have to be careful how you approach the pain doctor about it. But if you have an MRI of these things it will help your case allot. And again, you could talk to your doctor about whether he thinks you would benefit from it. It sounds like you would with everything going on. But you would need to ask him. And be very honest and up front with him. I wish you the very best of luck in the world girl. Pain, and having to go to these doctors is no fun. I know. Good luck to you, and God bless. Ruth

Thank you Mary. My pain management doctor is the one that put in my implant. He has since released me and doesn't prescribe pain meds because my primary care doc handles that end. Seems strange to me. I have been on Lyrica, I am on Cymbalta and Vicuprofen. Nothing seems to help. I don't want to give up and just think I am going to live in pain like this the rest of my life. I am only 47. Yes, I am in the states, Missouri. I don't want to come across as a drug seeker either. I have legitimate pain and all is documented through MRI's, nerve studies, xrays, been through it all. It is a shame that some people have ruined things for those that truly need it. Thank you so much for responding.
That is strange. Most pcp don't prescribe much anymore due to the new laws. If you went back to the pain mangement doc & told him the implant isn't working for you , wouldn't he then prescribe for you? Just a thought... Mary
