I haven't seen a satisfactory explanation as to why one should take phenazopyridine for only two days. If you know what you have and need it for a week, why not take it for a week? I have heard reference to an over the counter equivalent... is there one?

Phenazopyridine is a pain reliever that affects the lower part of your urinary tract. It "masks" the pain as opposed to "treats'" the pain.
The cause of the pain needs to be determined so that something more sinsiter can be treated or ruled out.
This is the reason why phenazopyridine should only be used short term.
If you know why you have the pain then I can not see why you can't take it for a while longer.
Sorry, I am not aware of any over the counter equivalent. Check with your pharmacist.
