I am 27 y/o with damaged cartilage in my left knee (MRI) and my knee cap pinches closer on the inside (X-RAY) primarily where the pain is. I recently had 3 shots of Orthovisc. The 1st 2 shots provided instant relief with stairs and weight bearing. The 3rd shot really hurt going in followed by a couple hours of heightened pain and now the pain is back to where it was before the shots. What happened with the 3rd shot? Was it injected in a different location behind the knee?
Why did my 3rd shot of orthovisc hurt?

How much time has passed since this 3rd shot? I get Hyalgen injections in my knee - a series of 5, one week apart and it's very similar. I've been getting them for six years now and at least one to two times in the 5-shot series hurts like you've described. My Otho doc says it's all in how things are that day - how much inflammation is there, how much the previous shot's have settled in place, etc. that determines how much space is in the joint that day. Can be how your dr. hits it that day too. I've found it to be very normal over the time I've been getting them. The pain dissipates over a week or so, then I'm left feeling much better. Any sign of infection? Watch for fever, increased pain, swelling, the joint feeling "hot" - if any of these happen get to your dr. or the ER right away. Hope yours is better soon - ElizaJane 23

I had my last shot the 3rd week of september. The needle didn't hurt, just the injection when he squirted. No infection or anything. Just bummed that the first 2 shots felt promising then the 3rd one was a flop. Stairs really suck. Running is no good either, though this running band masks the pain while running except when I run downhill.
That's a lot more time than my shots ever took to resolve. Might time to see the doctor - perhaps you have injured your knee even more. Mine is bone on bone with no cartilage at all left, but it did build up calcification so much that a ligament was being shredded. The ortho dr. did arthroscopic surgery and removed the calcification and it has been much better. I'm sure this is very disappointing after having the first and second shot give you so much improvement. -
I'll try the dr again, its just frowned upon being that im in the Air Force... I don't want to be 40 y/o with bone on bone, but its tough when my dr's have an ulterior motive to do whats best for the military first and the patient second.
Ah, I see. I was in the Air Force myself and my husband retired at 20 years service. You are in at a completely different time than I - we weren't at war back then. Have they mentioned when/under what conditions you would qualify for a knee replacement? I know at 40 they don't like to do them because you'll wear it out after 15 years and need another, and another. Try to hang in there with the shots, exercise (yeah, I know - it hurts but it's better to keep moving), glucosamine with chondrotin-sp?. I am trying a no red meat or eggs for 30 days to see if it helps - am having a severe arthritis flare up. Take care - I thank you for your sacrifice to serve our country. I can well imagine it's not easy. Your service is appreciated. -
The Dr. who gave the shots said that it should minimize the damage from running, jumping, or other impact related activities. I love running, but pain free, before I could run through the pain because it was at a tolerable level. I can try vitamin-m or something, the daypro they gave me a couple of months a go made me queasy (sp). I agree with the Dr's, both civilian and military that i want to prolong any type of surgery like a knee replacement, the Dr's also mentioned "scoping", i guess they scrape out the bad and try to shape the cartilege, but I'd rather do the shots until they can take a ray gun and zap it all better. I take TriFlex, which has glucosamine, chondrotin, and msm. the new version says it has added strength for people more active with sports and running, im trying that now. We'll see how that goes.
Yes, from what I've seen it's best to avoid the NSAIDs (the Daypro). Leave it to the military to prescribe a med as old as Daypro. My mother was on it some 20 years ago. It worked - she couldn't tolerate the pain without it. But her stomach started hemmoraging and had to be removed. Very harsh stuff. I have to keep in mind that you are dealing with military docs, and unfortunately they are different than docs on the outside. I've found the military to be excessively concerned with saving money. They once treated me for a condition I didn't have rather than do a laparoscopy to confirm it. Several months after the first treatment they did the exploratory surgery and found things were very different than they thought. Just sayin -
