Caffeine increases both the rate and extent of absorption of ergotamine when given together.
Caffeine is thought to exert its rate-accelerating effect by increasing the water solubility of ergotamine - thereby assisting ergotamine absorption from a lipid phase (GI membrane) into an aqueous phase (blood).
