First of all, best of luck to your son. If he can find a group like the teamsters union to join, that will be his best bet of obtaining insurance. It's going to be tough though as most insurance plans are based on hours worked. It will take alot of digging on your part to find a group he can join but there must be one somewhere, as I assume he isn't working now.
I don't know about financial aid but have been playing the insurance/no insurance game with pharmacies for 27 years or so. If you live near a Costco store, their pharmacy will be your best bet price wise. Sometimes if you live in a small town you can find a pharmacist with a heart who will keep the costs down for you,(very rare but a few exist).
Tell him to stay with foods that are easy to digest. If he can stay with mac&cheese or rice with peas and carrots etc. His food choices will greatly expand with Ultrase mt 20 or zenpep. Hope this helps some
