You have to have a prescription to obtain this drug. At this time the FDA has a hold on it but your pharmacist may be able to make you some. I have short bowell syndrome and have been taking paregoric for many years. Since it has been hard to get, and is high in alcohol, my doctor has given me another prescription for Tincture of Oium. This you take as drops. Both are effective but it also depends on how much bowell you have. I have a great pharmacy that now compounds Paregoric for me. Itis the next best thing. I hope you find something that works.

Capt. Shaw - I am in the same boat. I contacted a manufacturer, and they told me the FDA was cracking down on drugs they didn't approve (paregoric having been around a lot longer than the FDA) and they had to stop making it. I contacted my congressman and got a response today that I didn't quite understand (I will call them back Monday 2/28/11). I don't think their response agreed with the drug company's response to me. I suffer from IBS, and I am hysterical at not having my paregoric to carry around with me. I only usually use about12-16 oz. per year, which is not excessive, but it is the only thing that works immediately. I am going to contact some of the drugs listed to your response. I realize that was months ago, but have you had any success?

My parmacist has been manufacturing Paragoric for me the last 4 months. It works just as well. The only difference i find is in the taste, which isn't so great to begin with. I am slowly weaning myself off as it is hard on the liver. On the other hand, I have increased my inake of tincture of opium which works the same but without the alcahol. I hope you and anyone else that needs to use this can talk to their pharmacist for help. If there are other ideas on what to do, i would love to know them as well.
