I recently had a 2nd bout of diverticulitis followed by an unpleasant, painful colonoscopy. When does surgery become necessary? The doctor that I had with the first episode said that surgery would be required if I had another attack{6yrs. ago}, nothing was said about it this time. I would prefer to never have one but, I don't want it to turn into an emergency situation either, and are chances for a ressection pretty good if there isn't an infection present?
When does an operation become necessary?

I was diagnosed with diverticulosis several years ago, and have had several bouts of diverticulitis (no fun). The best thing is to get on antibotics right away, and your doctor should have given you a CT Scan at sometime to let you know how severe your condition is or if you need surgery. I have had to have several! I learned to prevent flare ups by watching my diet (lots of fiber and water). You can find diet suggestions on the internet or ask a specialist. Anyway surgery should always be your last resort! Hope this helps!

sweetpea602,thankyou... I had a CT Scan the first time and didn't go to the doctor the last time. The pain was different and in a different location, I didn't realize it was diverticulitis until 2wks. later during the colonoscopy. I did go to the doctor for blood work to make sure everything was ok prior to the proceedure and everything came back clear. Gastro doctor noted diverticulosis, mild diverticulitis and patchy inflammation. I am with the plenty of fiber and water routine. Hope you stay well.
