it is only a normal cold but find it difficult to know what to take with out yet another visit to doctors

Visit your pharmacy and talk to the pharmacist. Your pharmacist will need to ask questions about your symptoms. Make sure he / she knows that you are taking Methotrexate. Generally most cough medicines are going to be safe for you to take - but you should avoid anything that contains aspirin or a NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug).
